Chapter 14
The Power-Responsibility Dynamic
Transformation
Before you read
Kevin poses these at the start of the chapter, deliberately before his own argument. Answer them first if you can.
- 1
How do you think you’re influenced by family, friends, and other acquaintances?
- 2
How do you think you’re influenced by your community, culture, organizations, and others?
- 3
What do you see as the challenges to maintaining personal power in your life?
What the chapter says
Kevin’s own distillation, in his words — not a summary written for him.
Turning personal power into a superpower requires taking ownership of our personal power and letting go of those things over which we don’t have power and control.
It is fine for others to seek to influence us as long as we are conscious of the influence and use it only to inform our own decisions and choices.
Exercising our personal power can be scary, especially when we’re first establishing boundaries, but it’s also exhilarating.
We must avoid trying to unduly influence others in our efforts to maintain our personal power boundaries.
Transformational people and organizations have an abundance mindset, so they understand that individual and collective power grows when it is shared.
Letting go is a superpower for situations over which we don’t have power and control.
We can use values, metacognition, and critical and creative thinking to help us let go.
When we let go, our anxiety lessens because we’re reestablishing our power and control.
