Chapter 18
Building Strong and Resilient Communities
Achieving the Vision
Before you read
Kevin poses these at the start of the chapter, deliberately before his own argument. Answer them first if you can.
- 1
How do you show vulnerability to yourself and to others?
- 2
When others are vulnerable with you, how do you respond and how does it affect your relationship?
- 3
In what roles and what ways are you a leader and in what roles and what ways are you a follower?
What the chapter says
Kevin’s own distillation, in his words — not a summary written for him.
Trust is essential for building strength and resilience in families, teams, organizations, and communities.
Vulnerability-based trust allows a team or organization to achieve a state of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts.
We don’t need to be in leadership positions to build community or organizational trust, and our impact may be greater if we’re not in a leadership position.
Living our values, maintaining our personal power, and being responsible for things over which we have power and control will have a positive effect on those around us.
Proactive compassion can help others regain some sense of power and control, especially in the midst of traumatic events.
Partners on our best life journey can provide support and accountability, but everyone must maintain personal power and not cede power to the group.
True leaders are just one of the followers who is serving the organization in a different way.
