Chapter 04
Communities of Superheroes
How We Got Here and Our Challenges
Before you read
Kevin poses these at the start of the chapter, deliberately before his own argument. Answer them first if you can.
- 1
What do you think makes America a great nation and what prevents America from being a great nation?
- 2
What role do you believe you have, or might have, in making America a great nation?
- 3
What responsibilities do you believe citizens have toward our communities and country?
What the chapter says
Kevin’s own distillation, in his words — not a summary written for him.
Our hope for the future of our country lies in individuals who choose to take back and hold onto their personal power and refuse to compromise their values.
Values are the unshakable principles on which everything else in our life is built.
The overarching superpower this book will help us develop is personal power and responsibility; others include self-awareness, critical thinking, metacognition, bias awareness, bias mitigation, embracing discomfort, establishing boundaries, and being vulnerable.
To survive, let alone thrive, we must evolve our thinking through deliberate thoughtful application of our values and the lessons we’ve learned from our history and experience.
We the people are supposed to be the source of our nation’s strength, but we must choose to wield that power.
